Random #3

Photobucket
We skated at Jacob Park on and off for the last 10 years. We went back the other day and this is what we discovered. I accept it when a new ledge is knobbed, but "climbing blocks" that have been grinded and slid on for years now? Whats the point?

SEAS (Some Emo Ass Shit)

Why quitting seems perfect right now...

Because theres too much competition out there

Because I have to be better than good

Because what I thought was enough

IS NOT EXACTLY ENOUGH

To quit would prevent failure

To not try would be fail proof

I was supposed to choose a path

Instead, I may choose to stop altogether

Not die, but stop moving and stop trying

What can go wrong?

Its fail proof!

The Woodgrill Buffet

On Sunday evening, my friends and I decided to try the new buffet in Norwalk. The Sizzlin Woodgrill Buffet located on Imperial Hwy and Norwalk Blvd features pretty much the same items as Hometown and it costs around $16 total with beverage...I'm hoping thats just the dinner rate.

Photobucket
Jacob and Gil's first round...Ribs, fries, fried shrimp, burgers, the works...

Photobucket
My second round...Picture speaks for itself.

Photobucket
I don't think they'll choose me to be the spokesperson for Woodgrill buffet...

Photobucket
Like every buffet, they had the swirl soft serve.

Dessert was a challenge...We had it out of vanity and in the end there was just no consistency in what we were eating anymore, we just tried to eat our $16 worth.

If you feel like going to a crowded buffet and stuffing your face, you're probably better off going to Hometown...The Woodgrill has good intentions but it still felt like we were eating at a cafeteria and the food pretty much tasted like that as well(except for the fried shrimp, shit was bangin!)...

Photobucket
Next time, I'm going to Hof's Hut for another round of this.

Some technical stuff...

I haven't figured out how to get the full images on the blog yet. Some of you may have noticed that some of the pictures look cut-off and don't match the captions....Just click on the picture and my photobucket will come up with the full size. Sorry for the inconvenience.

The Days Just Aren't Long Enough!

Today was the last day of quite possibly one of the most fun and productive weekends I've had in a long time.

I woke up at 830am with a plan:

Text message

Who wants to skate? Leaving at 11... Plannin to be back by 5.

Photobucket

Photobucket
The Line-up:
Me
Jacob
Little Jacob
Trevor (he's little too but the only Trevor I know so I don't have to differentiate.)
Little Andy

Photobucket

We got our cameras, our water, a new broom because I left my other one at the spot yesterday, and parked across the street from the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet (which was poppin by the way, there was a lot of car and pedestrian traffic).
Photobucket
Photobucket

This time, we're changing it up a bit. We're going to have a little nature hike off the 5 freeway at the infamous Swamplands(which is actually not a swamp, its a ditch with a bunch of plants, puddles, graffitti, and freeway trash.)

Photobucket
After a short walk down Alondra passed the 5 freeway entrance, we ventured into Swampland territory with Jacob and Trevor leading the way.

Photobucket
Angles, its all about the angles.

Photobucket
Jacob decided to spend some time in my shoes.

Swamplands is not a skatepark thats for sure...cracks all over, water all over, vegetation, bugs, and some of the sketchiest tranny to skate on ever...

Photobucket
Andy somehow managed to get a nollie b/s heelflip on this thing...His first clip with us. I'm so proud of him.

Photobucket
Bigfoot? Loch Ness Monster? Chupacabara? No... its probably just another Jacob Sighting.

Photobucket
I missed the game today because we skated, but Jacob still represented.

Photobucket
"Yo, theres a bum who lives here...his name is Fred, but don't worry, he told me it was cool that we skate here." -Trevor

Photobucket
Its a wrap, two tricks...very hard earned tricks and the rest of the day to destroy some ledges.

Unfortunately, the next spot we planned on going to was being blown out(reports indicate up to 30 skaters many with cameras doing the same thing we were doing) so I went and bought a new board as seen below.

We ended up going to a shitty loading dock ledge behind an elementary school in Buena Park (thanks ryan) and finally got a couple more clips at Pacifica High School(with some gnarly falls too! worth uploading((will link later)))

It sucks that this weekend went by so quickly...my mom is coming back tomorrow, I'm going back to work, school is on Tuesday and everything will be back to normal. Either way, this is what skateboarding is all about. You take whatever days you can skate and make the most of it...

Photobucket

Sure, tricks were filmed and goals were accomplished, but the best part is always the lead up to it. The shit-talking, getting lost, stopping for a drinks and snacks, the cussing, the enuendos, the bonding, the line that is so close to being crossed, and simply just cruising. You don't need to do tricks to have fun when you're out skateboarding.... You just need to be out skateboarding.

P.S.

Photobucket
I miss my mom. She went on a weekend cruise from Long Beach to Mexico. They have a Western Theme tonight.

Photobucket
And please Gilbert, we will not accept a check to chip in for pizza...God damn...

Sessions

Photobucket

What happens when you get four underage kids, five over the hill skateboard veteranos, three cars, and two sony vx cameras?

You get the following:
Photobucket
trevor, new recruit andy(his first time out with us) and jacob

Photobucket
hyper youth

Photobucket
been there done that (jacob)

Photobucket
they always start off hopeful(before swollen heels and sore ankles)

Photobucket
gettin the stretch on for a sw backside heelflip

Photobucket
a spot that all of us can skate(and later get kicked out of)

Photobucket
Six hours, candy and soda, laughter, slams, sweat, cold, heat, frustration, elation, and 6 bar freestyles later, the kids grew up a little more and i feel a little younger.

All other evidence is captured on mini dv but we will have to wait to see how all of that went.

Thank you to Junior who trusted me with his two cameras while hes away partying in Mexico.

Trust me, you leave two vx's with me for a week, living in a city where the young and the old are ready to shred, you bet your ass that Junior is going to have some clips to edit when he gets back. Have a safe trip man.

More to come tomorrow...

A Bloody Nose

I got a bloody nose this morning at work.

It was pretty bad, the bleeding didn't stop for about ten minutes.

I excused myself to the upstairs bathroom and three nice gentlemen offered solutions to my predicament.

Man #1: Put a cold compression on your forehead it will help stop the bleeding. An icepack would make you pass out.

Man #2 (Eric): Whatever you do, just keep your head back.

Man #3: When I used to get bloody noses, my mom would put vaseline in my nose. That way it won't get dry.

10 minutes and 20 paper towels later...The bleeding subsided.
Photobucket

Bloody noses are like the hiccups, everyone has a different way for curing them. Its funny when things like this occur in public because even if it doesn't work, I still got everyones two cents about it. Its funny to hear them all.

Norwalk Skatepark

This is my favorite place to be besides at home.

All the stuff I want to skate is here and lots of flatground to play S-K-A-T-E.

Its also awesome to just to meet up the whole crew here.

Plus, I've watched some kids grow up the past few years over here.

They're so good now and in a way I feel like they're little brothers I never had.

They'd probably disagree but its cool with me...

I hate math class

I just got home from math class. I get a day off before I have to go back. Yay...

My Pops

My dad called me twice today.

Once because he thought my school called the house to say I was sick. (I'm 24 and later we found out that some one elses little girl wasn't feeling well)

And again to remind me not to buy anything to eat because he was making his noodle rice soup.

Some of you may refer to this as pho (pronounced fuh). The Vietnamese noodle sensation sweeping across the land.

Being of Cambodian descent however, I try my hardest not to refer to it as pho and instead just call it "rice noodle soup". Or in Khmer, we call it gatheal (try it with me, gah-theeo), what I grew up know it as.

We'd go out as a family on weekends to different gatheal joints mostly in Long Beach and sometimes Garden Grove.

Lately I've been to some pho spots with my sister and friends who are down to slurp up rice noodles in broth with floating pieces of steak, tripe, tendon, and other weird shit in animals that you wouldn't normally eat.

No matter what though, my pops makes it the best.

He has it down, from the consistency of the broth, to the proportion of steak and noodle, and I'm never left feeling unsatisfied after I eat his gatheal. It also lasts for atleast a day and half so I have no problem replacing all my meals with it.

This is one of those things I'll miss when hes gone.
I don't think anyone else can ever get this right.
Sometimes in your life, theres only one person who can do that thing you love the right way.

No matter how reckless he can be sometimes, hes never changed since I was a little kid. Whether I was 7 years old or 24 today, he still makes sure that his boy eats as much gatheal as he wants.

Photobucket
I went to an asian supermarket with him recently. He bought the store.

Randoms

Today has been a strange day so far.

Haven't been able to print any packing lists at work.

So... just sit down time.

I still haven't gotten over this sickness (although it started yesterday)

Theraflu tastes like shit.

In NBA news...

Thank goodness Trevor Ariza didn't get suspended.

I saw the play he made and its very clear he was going for the ball.

I hope Rudy Fernandez is okay, he is an exciting young talent in the league right now.

By the way, it is very easy to criticize a Lakers loss because they hardly every lose, so whenever

they lose, its easy to remember what happened.

Food for thought bitches.

I be sick like a mothafucka...

I'm sick.

I got boogies all in my nose.

I got something in the back of my throat, you know that thing where when you drink water it bugs.

My head is light.

I hate this feeling.

Yes, I finally made one!

My first few entries are going to consist of stream-conscious writings from fucking off in math class...

But first a few disclaimers:

1. Excuse my language. I have a tendency to cuss in my thoughts.

2. Everything in this blog is my opinion...If you disagree, reserve the hate and start your own blog.

3. Finally... This wouldn't exist if nobody read so thank you for taking the time to read this stuff.

Entry #1 9/11/2008

Come on man, cut it out

Stop sayin some shit we've all heard before

Its impossible for me to sound poetic

From the fear that what I write will sound forced

That people can see right through it

For every word and sentence is over-thought

And someone out there can figure out this manufactured sophistication

I'm not lying, this is all stream consciousness

I'm too lazy to look this over and correct grammatical and spelling errors

Too lazy to use bigger or more meaningful words

Too lazy to even think about tapping into my inner-self Its not because I think I'm too cool or too above

But I prefer to appeal to non-artists and part-time intellectuals.
